What Internet Speed for IPTV? A Simple Guide for HD and 4K
How many Mbps you really need for HD, Full HD and 4K IPTV, how to test your speed properly, and cheap fixes when your connection falls short.

“What internet speed for IPTV do I actually need?” is one of the first questions people ask us, usually right before they order. The short answer: about 10 Mbps for a steady HD picture and 25 Mbps or more for 4K. The longer answer is more useful, because the number on your broadband contract and the speed that reaches your TV are often very different things.
The quick answer: what internet speed for IPTV
| Picture quality | Minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| SD (older channels) | 3 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| HD (720p) | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | 8 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 4K / UHD (2160p) | 15 Mbps | 25 Mbps or more |
For comparison, Netflix publishes its own recommendations: 3 Mbps for HD, 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for Ultra HD. Our “comfortable” figures are a little higher because live TV can’t buffer as far ahead as a film on demand, and live sport needs more data than a slow-moving drama.
Why the number on your bill isn’t the whole story
Your provider advertises the speed to your router. What matters for IPTV is the speed that reaches the device plugged into your TV, at the time you watch. Three things eat into it:
- Wi-Fi. A thick wall or a floor between router and TV can halve your speed. Distance matters too.
- Everyone else in the house. A teenager gaming, a laptop backing up to the cloud and a phone updating apps all share the same connection.
- Peak time. Between about 7pm and 11pm, networks are busiest. That is also when most of us watch TV.
How to test your IPTV internet speed properly
- Test from the TV device, not your phone. On a Fire TV Stick, install a speed-test app from the Appstore, or open the Silk browser and visit fast.com. On a Smart TV, use its web browser.
- Test in the evening, ideally around 8pm, when you would normally be watching.
- Test three times and look at the lowest result, not the best.
- Compare with what your line should get. Ofcom’s broadband checker shows the expected speeds at your address.
If the result from the TV is much lower than the result from your phone next to the router, the problem is inside your home, not your broadband line. That is good news, because it is usually cheap to fix.

How many streams at once?
Speeds add up, so the answer to what internet speed for IPTV you need depends on how many people watch at once. If two people want to watch different channels in Full HD at the same time, plan on roughly double. A simple rule of thumb:
- One HD stream: 10 Mbps
- One 4K stream: 25 Mbps
- One 4K plus one HD stream: 35 Mbps or more
- Add a few Mbps for phones, video calls and gaming in the background
Broadband speed for IPTV: what about latency and stability?
Raw speed isn’t the only thing that matters. Two other measurements appear on most speed tests:
- Ping (latency): how quickly data makes a round trip. Under 50 ms is fine for IPTV.
- Jitter or packet loss: how much the connection wobbles. Unstable Wi-Fi shows up here even when the headline speed looks good.
A steady 20 Mbps is better for IPTV than a connection that jumps between 80 Mbps and 3 Mbps.
Cheap fixes when your speed falls short
1. Use a cable
An Ethernet cable from the router to the TV or streaming box is the most effective fix. Fire TV Sticks need an Ethernet adapter, which is inexpensive.
2. Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Most modern routers broadcast two networks. The 5 GHz one is faster over short distances. Connect your TV device to it.
3. Move the router
Routers work best out in the open, up high, and away from the microwave, fish tanks and metal cabinets. Moving it from the floor behind the sofa can make a real difference.
4. Try powerline adapters or mesh Wi-Fi
If the TV is at the other end of the house, powerline adapters send the internet through your electrical wiring, and a mesh system adds extra Wi-Fi points. Either is usually cheaper than upgrading your broadband.
5. Restart things
Restart the router and the streaming device once a week. It clears memory leaks and often restores full speed.
6. Lower the quality when you need to
If your connection really can’t manage 4K, watch the Full HD version of the channel. On a TV under about 43 inches, most people struggle to see the difference from the sofa.
Is full fibre worth it? Broadband speed for IPTV in practice
If full fibre is available at your address and costs about the same as your current plan, it is usually worth it, mostly because it is more stable in the evenings. But you don’t need gigabit speeds: a reliable 30–70 Mbps connection runs IPTV in 4K comfortably for a typical household.
What if I’m in Ireland, Malta or Gibraltar?
The same numbers apply everywhere. In rural Ireland, fixed wireless and older copper lines vary a lot, so evening testing matters even more. See our pages for IPTV Ireland, IPTV Malta and IPTV Gibraltar for local notes.
Mobile data, 4G and 5G home broadband
If you don’t have a fixed line, you may be wondering what internet speed for IPTV you can get from a mobile connection. 5G home broadband routers often deliver 50 Mbps or more, which is plenty. 4G is more variable: in a good signal area it can manage HD comfortably, but speeds drop in the evening when a mast is busy.
Two things to watch with mobile connections:
- Data caps. An hour of 4K can use 7 GB or more, so an evening of sport soon adds up. Check your plan is genuinely unlimited.
- Router placement. A mobile router by a window, facing the nearest mast, can be twice as fast as one tucked in a cupboard.
Hotspotting from a phone works for a quick test, but it isn’t a good long-term way to watch: phones throttle hotspot speeds and get hot.
Try before you buy
The only test that really answers the question is watching IPTV on your own connection. That is why we offer a 2-hour free trial: run it in the evening, try a 4K channel, and see how it holds up.
Summary
So, what internet speed for IPTV do you need? Around 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, measured from the TV device, in the evening. If your number is lower, start with a cable or better Wi-Fi before paying for faster broadband. And if you are still unsure, message us your speed-test result and we will tell you honestly what to expect. Frequently asked questions
Is 10 Mbps enough for IPTV?
Yes, for one HD stream. It is not enough for 4K, and it gets tight if others are using the internet at the same time.
Does IPTV use a lot of data?
Roughly 1–3 GB per hour for HD and 7 GB or more per hour for 4K. Most home broadband plans are unlimited, but keep this in mind on mobile data or capped connections.
Will a faster router help?
A newer router with better Wi-Fi can help if your current one is several years old. But a cable to the TV helps more, and costs less.
